Do you know that there are several ways that we can waste time? We do not think of time as a commodity but it is! Time is very limited and yet, we do not really appreciate what we have.
In an average lifespan of 70 years, we have only 6,048,000 seconds. How many have you used up? It is only the older you get, that you start realising that the clock is ticking away mercilously and the importance of time. Then, today becomes the first day of the rest of your lives.
But how does time wasting happen? Is it due to you alone, or does external factors come into play? Actually, it is common sense that tells me that time wasting is a synergy between ourselves and the people around us. What we can only hope for is to reduce this synergy.
How can we achieve this?
First, know what are the most frequent sources of time wasting. Next, see how may of them applies to you. Once you recognise your time wasting weaknesses, it’s all up to you to find ways to improve.
Now, researchers have more or less identified the main ways that people generally waste time in their lives. I’m listing them down here, not necessarily in order, so that you do not have to waste time searching for them yousrself!
You waste time in the office when you:
1. Do not schedule the most important stuff first,
2. Take on work that’s not part of your job,
3. Do not delegate work to others,
4. Begin something blindly,
5. Finish a task without really completing it,
6. Overlook using modern equipment or technology,
7. Allow meetings and discussions to go on and on,
8. Undertake too many projects simultaneously,
9. Let interruptions rule you,
10. Make unnecessary site visits and/or telephone calls,
11. Are concerned with trivial stuff instead of the BIG picture,
12. Socialise too much.
Do you recognise yourself here? I do. So, I’m setting myself a personal goal here to really try to eliminate the time wasters in my life. I hope you will too.
Thank for reading. I haven’t wasted your time, have I?
