AirAsia to fly into Singapore

Christmas has come early for AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes. The biggest story in today’s newspapers is the news that AirAsia has finally been given the green light to fly into Singapore. This is the biggest present that Fernandes could have hoped for. And only a few days ago, he was still venting his frustration that the landing rights in Singapore could never happen in the near future.

According to The Star, AirAsia will operate two daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. However, the New Straits Times went further to say that AirAsia will also operate two daily flights each from Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching to Singapore from the beginning of next year.

No matter, the fact remains that AirAsia has now secured its prime present. Ho ho ho!

In a reciprocal arrangement, Singapore’s Tiger Airways will be allowed to fly from the republic into various points in Malaysia, giving travellers two low-cost carriers to choose from. Currently, the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore route is being monopolised by Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines, which together fly 20 times a day between the two cities.
