Whither the NCER, post-election?

With Penang now firmly in the control of the Democratic Action Party-Parti Keadilan Rakyat alliance, the biggest question now is the speed of the state’s transformation into a major logistics and transportation hub under the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).

Personally, I do not see any change of direction. It will likely continue despite this change in the leadership. Among the projects earmarked under the NCER are the infrastructural upgrading of the airport, sea port and the state’s logistics capabilities.

The DAP will certainly be mindful that Penang is an investment destination for some of the world’s top technology companies and Penang needs to move forward.

However, it will be more likely that the new state government will review the Penang Global City Centre. The PGCC created a lot of hue and cry last year and it is one of the main issues that contributed to Gerakan’s downfall.
