Keys to career success

Very often, we hear of people commenting that their careers are at a dead end. But if you ask them what they have done to get their careers going again, they will look at you with a puzzled look.

Success, whether in work or in life, does not come by accident. If you want success, you have to plan for it. If you want success, you have to push for it. If you want success, you have to change for it. In short, you’ll need to work hard at it for success.

Here are three pointers to help you revive your stalling career:

Sharpen your people skills

Learn to build rapport with your colleagues. Rapport means cultivating a good working relationship with people around you based on mutual understanding or trust. If you cannot do this, how can you work in a team, because teamwork is very important to getting your work done. Building rapport says a lot about building your people skills.

Project a professional self-image

Focus on gaining a business-like air. Be professional. Know when to be serious at work and when to relax at play. Make people know you can be relied on to get work done when work needs to be done. And then you shouldfocus on getting positive results.

Go with the winners

Ever heard of the expression that success breeds success? You can apply this to your career by beginning to mix around in the company of other hardworking and success-oriented co-workers. Don’t stick with the losers in your company.

Don’t wait to be noticed

In this busy world, people have to know that you are doing a GREAT job. Don’t stay silent about it. Be your own promoter of your contributions. Nobody can do it better than you.

Take control

Are you a follower or a leader? If you are a follower, then it’s time that you do not let others dictate your pace and your place in your job. You alone will know what you want; so get up and work towards fulfilling it.

Acquire life-long education

Education does not stop with your college or university qualifications. It’s important to learn new skills, new knowledge and new technologies to keep ahead of others and keep yourself marketable for the future.
